Constructing the D Major Scale
To begin, I have listed the natural pitches from D to D.
D-E-F-G-A-B-C-D
Since we know the natural pitches from D to D form the Dorian mode, we need to alter some notes.
Remember the rule: As naturals, E-F and B-C are Half-Steps.
Let’s now see which steps need to be adjusted.
I will mark the steps that are correct with a check,
and label those that do not fit the step pattern with an X.
Remember, a sharp sign, raises a pitch by a half-step.
Utilizing a sharp sign for the pitches F and C, change these notes to F-sharp and C-sharp, which in turn adjust the step measurements and now form the correct major scale step pattern, built from D.
The Key of D MAJOR has Two Sharps — F# and C#.
Now let’s get more major scale building practice by assigning different pitches as the Tonic.
