Concert Planning
When first beginning a new string program, the scope and number of planned orchestra events should be conservative. Plan the entire year’s orchestra calendar well before the new school year begins. In this way, all logistics will flow smoothly. Presenting well thought out plans gives confidence to everyone involved.
The first year, begin with two concerts — a Winter Concert and a Spring Concert. Once your orchestras are more advanced, you can always add additional concerts.
Students learn crucial skills performing concerts. Watching a video recording of the concert performance instills a sense of accomplishment and pride. In addition, musical and technical details can be analyzed for further improvement.
Concert Planning Checklist
  • Set concert dates, coordinating them with school calendar.
  • Reserve performance space and include a dress rehearsal.
  • Plan repertoire and rehearse.
  • Determine the number of chairs and stands needed.
  • Prepare and print programs.
  • Secure a video camera and a person to record.
Building Camaraderie
Part of the joy of playing in an orchestra is mingling and making new friends. Kids are known to be especially fond of cookies and adult-kids enjoy them too! After a concert, congratulations and bravos are in order for all involved.
Planning a simple reception, creates the opportunity for students and families to relish the concert experience. Candid moments can also be captured by taking pictures for posterity. Receptions make great forums for meeting with parents and connecting with your students.
