In all honesty, the chin rest should really be called a jaw rest.
When used correctly, the chin rest actually makes contact with your jaw down to the chin.
If chin rests were literally a rest for the chin, gravity would land the weight of the instrument on your lap. The violin and viola would wind up in the location of a necktie! This location is not ‘fashionable’ in any sense of the word.
The arrow above, is pointing to the proper chin rest contact location region. Especially when starting out, pay careful attention to the contact that the chin rest makes with you. Proper chin-rest position allows your playing time to be comfortable and more enjoyable.
Using the Chin Rest properly is as simple as Connecting Puzzle Pieces!
