The end-pin retracts into the body of the cello and bass when the instrument is not in use or is in its case. You extend the end-pin and then lock it into place with the thumb screw.

End-Pin CAP
The end-pin sits inside a housing chamber, which is set into the cello.
Near its top, the end-pin has a ring and a screw that allow you to slide the end-pin to the correct playing length.
END-PIN DETAILS
You tighten the screw in order to lock the rod into place at the proper length. The end-pin comes to a point, and usually it has a rubber tip, which helps prevent damage to the floor.
