In Common-Time, the first beat gets the main beat emphasis.

Beat 3, gets a secondary beat accent, which is not as strong as the down-beat, but stronger than beats 2 and 4.

Most conducting patterns have variations on the shapes that are gestured, which serves to convey beat-patterns.  It is standard to convey the rhythm with the right arm.
