CELLO PLAYING-POSITION QUESTION #3
IS MY RIGHT ARM FREE TO TRAVEL THE WIDTH OF THE CELLO, WITHOUT THE NEED TO ADJUST MY BODY?
When playing the cello, your right arm needs to have the freedom to move independently, without the need to adjust your playing-position posture. Learning a comfortable and fluid motion to your right arm will allow you to become highly skilled at bowing.
THE RIGHT HAND RAINBOW
By tracing the motions of drawing an imaginary arch, you will unlock the freedom of motion needed when bowing correctly. Begin with proper sitting position and go from rest-position to playing-position. The goal is to get comfortable with the width of your cello.
Now lift your right arm over your head and float your arm, as you did with the left arm float. Slowly lower your arm and allow your right hand to remain suspended in the air, slightly above the string.
Now imagine you are drawing a Rainbow. Begin at the bottom left side. Continue to move your right arm and hand independently from needing to move your torso, and draw an imaginary arch, all the way up and over to the lower right side.
Now reverse the steps and travel back to the left side. Practice the motions with the goal of perfecting a smooth and natural arch-shape.
