TURNS
A TURN can be interpreted in two different ways and is determined by its placement. Pitches in a Turn, are performed melodically and enhance music phrasing.
Turns are expressive ornaments.
The speed of turns, are usually quite a bit slower than mordents and trills.
Turn Placement
When a Turn is placed directly after a note, the ornament is performed as such: The written pitch, the upper neighbor note, the main pitch, the lower neighbor note and back to the original note.
When a Turn is placed directly over a note, the pattern begins with the upper neighbor pitch, then the notated pitch, the lower neighbor pitch and back to the printed pitch.
Turns are inverted, if a slash-line is notated.
