Different strings have different tensions. All strings have more tension closer to the bridge and less resistance further down the fingerboard.
Playing too close to the bridge creates a harsh and metallic tone. Playing too far down the fingerboard makes it difficult to hit only one string at a time. The strings have less clearance at this location.
Never use your fingernail to play pizzicato!
