ARTICULATION and BOWING STYLE
Legato, means to perform with smooth bow strokes.
The dotted-half notes are 3-beats in duration and performed legato.

BOW-SPEED and BOW DISTRIBUTION
While performing legato notes, enact the string and make it ring.
Save the bow, by performing slow moving bow-speed motions.
Notes performed before and after long duration notes, require a quicker moving bow-speed.

All bowed melodies present bow distribution challenges. Identifying the challenge is the first step to successful performance mastery. The next step is to determine a logical bow distribution performance solution and to practice performing your part.

You need a lot of bow for the dotted-half notes, so start near the frog and save the bow. In order to compensate for the dotted-half notes, the quarter note Up-Bows require a faster moving bow.

Legato Bow Distribution Rule:
Save
the bow for longer notes
Flow
the bow for shorter notes.
